Biography
Recent books of poetry by the late Barbara Guest (1920–2006) include The Red GazeMiniatures, and Rocks on a Platter: Notes on Literature, all from Wesleyan. In 2003 she published two books of prose: Forces of the Imagination: Writing on Writing (Kelsey Street) and Dürer in the Window: Reflections on Art (Roof). In 1999 she was awarded the Frost Medal for Lifetime Achievement by the Poetry Society of America.

    Curious spirits, Eleanor says. I cannot discern that these spirits around you have a personal connection to you, by which I mean, I cannot discern the emotions common to relations and loved ones, like love or concern. These are spirits who you do not know. I don't know why they are gathered around you. Maybe they are just passing through and something about you has detained them for the hour, for the day.
