Mary Jo Bang
Mary Jo Bang is the author of eight books of poems—including Louise in Love (Grove), A Doll for Throwing, and Elegy (both Graywolf), which received the National Book Critics Circle Award—and a translation of Dante’s Inferno (Graywolf), with illustrations by Henrik Drescher. She teaches creative writing at Washington University in St. Louis.

Send more Chuck Berry, went the joke—how the aliens would reply when they got their first spin of the Golden Record on the Voyager. Sweet, friendly aliens with toe-tapping rhythm (whether or not they had feet), an appreciation for sweat and guitar riffs pooling together even if they had no first-hand experience with either.
