Joyce Carol Oates
Longtime Conjunctions contributor Joyce Carol Oates is currently Visiting Distinguished Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. She is the author, most recently, of the novel My Life as a Rat and the story collection Beautiful Days (both Ecco), in which several stories originally appearing in Conjunctions have been reprinted. Her story “Undocumented Alien” in Conjunctions:67, Other Aliens received a Pushcart Prize. She is the 2019 recipient of the Jerusalem Prize.

When I thought of their home life, I pictured them hunched beside flame, firelight bringing out grime on their faces.

     Between my mother and grandmother, Mrs. Hufferman is always referred to as Lilly.
