Jorge Ángel Pérez
Publications by Jorge Ángel Pérez include the fiction collection Lapsus calami (Ediciones Unión), winner of UNEAC’s David Prize; the novel El paseante cándido (Ediciones Unión), winner of the UNEAC Cirillo Villaverde Prize and the Italian Grinzane Cavour Award; the novel Fumando espero (Editorial Letras Cubanas), shortlisted for the Rómulo Gallegos International Novel Prize; and En La Habana no son tan elegantes (Editorial Letras Cubanas), winner of the Alejo Carpentier Short Story Prize and the Literary Critics’ Award. He lives in Havana, Cuba.

Outside the stars were fading and the sky was slowly rosying at the edges when we found the skeleton. At first it was visible only as a clutch of white daggers, thickly clotted with spiderwebs, compressed between the plaster wall and the heavy wooden timbers. I don’t know what I expected it to be.

Remember and testify, they would say, in order that this or that bad thing does not happen again. I harbored no such faith in remembering. Nor in testimony. I fail to believe in them still.
